Athena is Dead

This morning I heard a big crash on the floor when I was asleep. Hours later when I woke up, Athena was nowhere to be found.

I finally found her. She had flown into a glass vase and hit her head hard.

The same day that Joe Paterno died, Athena is dead.

We will sorely miss her.

We were conducting routine flight operations off the balmy coast of Southern California -- in the distance the coastal mountain range of Santa Ana where the blistery, dry winds blew from the deep canyons -- when our lives were instantly shattered and forever changed.

On that gray September day, I woke up like any other, switched on the remote to see whether my Braves still remained on top of the Major Leagues and whether the Chargers would start Drew Brees or Doug Flutie as quarterback during the regular season.

Strange, I thought, as I started my morning ritual of shaving, brushing and dressing. One of the twin towers was hit by an errant airplane. What kind of idiot would do that?

In the wardroom, I polished up my continental breakfast while participating in the obligatory morning gossip with friends.

"What's up PAO?" The yellow-shirted flight deck officer chuckled as we bumped knuckles.

"Not a thing, Shooter. Hoping for a slow day and a nice weekend in port. Got lots of tours, but also time with my little one. How are your catapults?"

"Well, we're flying aren't we? We got lots of steam enough to send a MAC truck flying 100 miles."

"Super, save some steam for my DVs. So, I hear the Chargers are finalizing on a starting quarterback. Do you think Brees will fly or go down the Ryan Leaf road?"

[DVs or Distinguished Vistiors is the Navy program to expose community members to the role of the aircraft carrier. The DVs are flown aboard the plane and spend a night on board before taking off again the next day]

"Nah, Brees is quality stuff man. Still can't get over the Bolts picking Leaf over Hasselbeck. I've got a lot of hope pegged on this year, though."

"Aha, gotta run. Got a big tour to plan this weekend -- Navy Leaguers and VFW."

A small cadre of junior officers from both the ship's company and air wing created a weekly "fantasy football wing" aboard the carrier. It took a lot work sometimes following the performance of each player, but it built camaraderie, and these were the same officers that I worked with regularly when hosting distinguished visitors for a 24 hour visit to watch carrier flight operations out at sea.

I grabbed a mug of java then made my leisurely stroll across the hangar bay to my office on the second level of the ship's island to start the day's work of planning media visits and shipboard tours. As the newest aircraft carrier in the west coast, we had a plethora of inport tour requests from veterans groups to students, some requesting for specific things to see. But every tour, no matter what the scope or size stopped in the Stennis Room to honor the living legacy of one of the greatest senators of all time: Senator Stennis, the Statesman who served in the US Senate for 41 years until 1989 and coined the ship's mantra: "Look Ahead."

By this time, I had almost forgotten all about the World Trade Center. When I arrived at the office, my entire division of three journalists and a Senior Chief Petty Officer were already there, but instead of reading email or editing the ship's paper, their eyes were glued to the TV. The second tower was now ablaze and the sky all around southern Manhattan was filled with a huge plume of smoke.

My Beloved Mac Book Pro

Ok, so when my car was broken into last week on Emancipation Day. I looked sadly into my car and was aghast to see my backpack stolen -- inside my beloved 15" MacBook Pro.

There was some consolation. When electronics get stolen, you pray that there is a newer model out -- mine was two years old, and this time I was in luck.

Parked along 17th Street, NW

This Februrary, Apple released their new line of MacBook Pros with faster processors, more powerful graphics processors, an HD camera and a new port for something new and something cool: Thunderbolt.

Although, the new Macs look exactly the same as previous models, they boast Intel processors that are dual and quad core chips -- twice the performance of earlier models.

On the 15 and 17-inch models, Apple boosted the graphics with an AMD Radeon graphics chip which switches smoothly from one processor to the other, depending on use.

So, with these great options, what are the best choices:

I would go with the 15 or 17 inch, not the 13-inch. In terms of speed, the 17 inch version is much faster, something I would notice with all the applications I use, simultaneously.

But there is one big drawback to the 17 inch. The screen is way big which is good for programming -- but Yikes! it won't fit in my backpack -- well just barely.

And, no I don't want to walk around town with my MCB sticking out my bag -- the last thing I want to do is become another target.

Gung Hay Fat Choy to the Happy Hare

Colin misses Chinatown LA. There's so much more to do there, the dim sum is better priced, the pork dumplings are juicier and yes, even the sushi is fresher.

But apart from jetting cross country, we had to settle for the subdued rhythm and complacency of New York's uncultured second cousin.

For the rest of the year, visiting Chinatown DC equates to rooting for the ruinous Wizards only to have your hopes dashed once and again or keeping up with the latest fashion or decoration trend trend at American Apparel or Bed and Bath.

Up ahead, the two brand new electronic billboards flash colorful displays of anything from cell phones to upcoming sporting events.

So there's not much China in Chinatown anymore. Back before the Verizon Center revitalized this once edgie ethnic enclave, Chinatown stretched 9 blocks from Judiciary Square to the old Convention Center (now a huge parking lot). It was a family-oriented neighborhood, and over the years as development encroached, the boundaries started getting squeezed.

Yes, there's still scores of authentic Chinese restaurants where you see the denizens of the old Chinatown still carrying out the day's business or mingling around eating jook with ginger and drinking hot tea, the kind that warms your soul on a nippy winter day.

This is the year of the Hare. One of the highlights of Chinese new years are the firecrackers, and one of the most spectacular things is the Dragon Dance. Today we saw three Dragons sparring with each other in the middle of the Boulevard.

On my way back from the NYC Marathon, I stumbled upon something, I've never seen before in my entire life-- a restaurant with my name on it. No, better -- a restaurant named after me.

After running a grueling race, my appetite had not yet returned, but needless to say, this was one venue I couldn't let go.

I enjoyed the burger, fries special and it was washed down succulently with a cold bottle of Corona light.

The owner wasn't in town -- was visiting relatives in Mexico, so I took a picture posing with Christina, my bartender, instead.

TS Nicole: Ode to a Storm

Normally I hate tropical storms. They knock down trees, flood basements and lose power.

But now with my newfound love of SUP, I wait for you at the end of the pier, every day, every single hour

Tropical Storm Nicole brought strong winds, heavy rain

I dash out to the Potomac ecstatic, feeling soundly insane

I crossed the Douglass Bridge and turned right at Nationals Park,

I launched my board at the sparkling Diamond Teague Pier, designed to make the southeast waterfront spark.

The Anacostia River, grimy, polluted and brown

Normally I would grimace, my face wrinkled in a bitter frown

But today I was elated, the wind right behind my back

And I paddled gleefully down the Anacostia on a broad reach tack (wind to my starboard quarter)

The trick to running a downwind is to ride the swells and not lose balance.

It's all about focus, not your strengths or your talents.

Normally swells are long and steady and ragged like a mop.

But today, the swells were gusting and tall, full of ripples and chop.

Soon, I decided to give in and not work any longer

As I past by the National airport, the waves grew higher and the winds blew stronger.

I shut my eyes, felt the breeze and let the river take me home.

I was in Heaven on the Potomac, surrounded by towering swells, just me, my board alone.

Three Girls and a Bird

I am clearly not your average guy. For starters, if you read my background and saw all the traveling I did as a kid, you would think that my last name is Barnum & Bailey.

But I have a confession to make -- I am living with three beautiful (single) women. No, I'm not in love with any of them. No, I'm not gay, either, but I have a lot of gay friends.

I served in the military for 20 years, and I regret many of my friends and shipmates had to lie to serve their country.

Team Peppler on the Potomac

I love the Beatles and I'm really into social sports. That's why the SUP is the perfect sport for Colin and I. For the 3rd day in a row, I attended "Abbey Road on the River" at the National Harbor without having to pay a dime.

Colin and I left from Old Towne from Jones Point Park. The ride was smooth with the wind gusting to 15 plus knots and nice size waves.

It is billed as the world's largest Beatles-inspired music festival. And today, I was excited about getting a chance to see it -- from the River.

We launched my boat from Old Towne Alexandria, off the rocks where the water is waist high. All around me Canadian geese napping and drifting along with a gathering of ring neck ducks. There was huge boulders of drift wood, enough to supply firewood for a family of four for the entire winter.

Then we were off, paddling through the glassy river, heading south along the Potomac under the massive, iconic Woodrow Wilson Bridge and onto National Harbor.

Once we arrived at National Harbor, we enjoyed the soothing tunes of Lennon and McCartney.

For the next hour, we listened to the rhythmical sounds from Beatles classic while the waves rocked us back and forth

SUP for Cross Training

Running, Biking, Swimming -- all I needed was another sport. That's why today, after much deliberation, I finally broke down and bought a SUP.

Ok, what's a SUP, some may say. Well, it's the newest multi-water recreation. It's a Stand up paddle board and it's a lot better than surfing. Why, because you don't have to wait for the wind and you can use it in any body of water, even a pool.
Unique Design
SUP is like walking on water. The way the board is designed, you feel light, move fast, while your feet are partially submerged -- all the way maintaining buoyancy and stability.

Peace Out
It's peaceful, adventurous, stimulating. Face it, life is getting more complicated. Paddling on any body of water, even if it's on the gentle, monotonous Anacostia is Zen Peace -- and we all need that break.

Core Exercise
SUP is also good for your core. What's that -- your midsection -- the part that joins your upper body with your lower body. Why is that important. Because it's the area of the body that gets the least amount of training. Any sport that is conducted on an unstable surface (SUP, surfing, windsurfing) is ideal for training your core. Yet, as a triathlete, your core is important to sustain your performance and to injury proof your body.

Cross Training
Quite frankly, biking, swimming and running is not enough. Improving your flexibility and stability is key to improving your performance. While standing on the board, you adopt an athletic stance by dropping the hips and keeping the torso upright. This position actively engages several muscle groups: hip flexors, quadriceps, glutes, etc. And since water is unstable, your body will work harder and burn more calories while maintaining balance.

So want to do better in your next triathlon, try paddle boarding...

A Brick and a Broken Window

It all started with a gentle tap tap tap on my door. It was a Metropolitan DC police officer. Wierd. Am I in trouble? I had been home all day, innocently typing away on my computer. What could be the matter?

"Is that your car out back?" he pointed to my forlorn Subaru Baja parked out listlessly on the street, directly in front of my house.

"Yeah" Everything looked just fine. I started getting worried.
What I didn't see out on the street, the driver's side window was completely smashed with a retainer brick snatched from a neighbor's yard.

The thug had also gone in my glove compartment and stolen money and change. He had also taken my beloved Iphone car adaptor (which I didn't notice until after the police had taken off)

Oddly, an HVAC technician's car several houses down the road was also broken into by the same thug. This time, he made out with his GPS unit. The cop said that it was definitely a desperate druggie trying to steal GPS units, loose change anything to buy that next fix. How wonderful -- I think I would have just given him the money, (after I preached to him).

So why did my car get targeted? Hopefully, I haven't made too many enemies in the hood. Was it because I'm former military. I have a strange name. I don't throw throw horse shoes at neighborhood block parties? Did I have beer in the backseat. Not nearly... I believe, it was likely because my GPS dashboard mount was still affixed to my windshield. Thankfully, my unit was inside the house charging, but the thug likely thought that it was still inside the car, so he went after it. But all he got was loose change and (yes, my nano adapter).

I also learned that because my car is manual, it is a disincentive (but not a complete deterrent) for the "joy riders" to take it for a spin. Many of these thugs don't know how to drive a stick and may target another car.

So how much was the damage? For the window alone? $230. But that's not all. There's damage to the door lock (won't be able to open the driver's side with a key). Unfortunately, my comprehensive is $500 and the total damage just adds up to about $500. So I may not be able to get my car lock repaired.

Ironically, when I showed up at Royal Glass in Capitol Heights, I ran into the HVAC technician. We both laughed about the odd coincidence.

As for the warranty. I was glad to hear that for $15 per window, I can purchase a lifetime warranty on each window (even if it's broken by vandals). By doing this, I can keep my deductible at $500.

So where's my car now. Out in the street in front of my house where I had parked it. I'm not changing my normal, basic routine because of what happened. Yes, I'm mindful of what I leave inside my car. But I've got to live my life unhindered and worryfree and quite frankly they can take the whole car if they want it, just make sure I'm not in it and please don't leave me the carcass.

Don't Know Much About History of the Gullahs

"People come and go. Some Cultures even go through change. But language must never be lost, or else we'll lose our identity and our will to live."

Life can be exciting at times, especially when you're open to explore it. I was literally just in the area meeting with the inspector for 2356 Green Street, SE, a house with a splendid, panoramic view of the Capitol, USS Barry and the expanding development across the Federal gateway.

The inspection went fine, so I decided to kill some time in the local area -- it had been a long while since I visited the Anacostia Museum -- had no idea, what was on display...why not? Sometimes surprise can be exciting.

As soon as I walked in, the museum staff informed me of a program that was just starting called "The Roots of Gullah". Attending high school in coastal Georgia and being stationed aboard USS O'Bannon (DD-987) in Charleston, South Carolina, I had definitely heard of the Gullah people before. The problem was, the topic never really interested me much -- it was something I overlooked or just took for granted.

So, why did I attend -- well, in the past, I would have normally turned a deaf ear. Now in many ways, I have turned over a new leaf. After attending numerous Folklife Festivals in DC, and especially after my dual-European trips this summer. I have somewhat morphed into a pseudo folklorist.

At first, I thought, I would just hear a bit of it and make an early exit. But for some reason, the program really grabbed me. I was horrified by the way the slaves were treated and brought to the US. I was amazed how these African Americans in the Low Country (South Carolina and Georgia) could keep the Gullah culture and language alive after so many years. And I was fascinated by the linguistics of Gullah and Creole, as well as how some Gullahs escaped slavery, taming the Florida wilderness to become Black Seminoles.

It was great that the Low Country was ideal land to harvest rice, just as the Africans did in Sierra Leone, but the colonists fell sick to malaria and yellow fever which spread quickly in the rice fields, while the Gullahs were more immuned.

What was also neat was the folklore tales that were derived from the rich immigrant cultures of the Gullahs. And as new generations of slaves were born in the plantations, their children grew up speaking Gullah as their native language. Gullah became a Creole language which is one that combines words and grammar from a combination of different languages. (When I was in Haiti in March, I was taught some Creole words so that I could get around). Meanwhile the planters learned Gullah so that they could communicate with their workers. Both farmers and planters often learned Gullah as children from their household servants. These servants also told them Gullah folktales which also exist today.

For a long time, in the early 20th century, many people dismissed the Gullah language as simply "bad English." It wasn't until 1930, when Lorenzo Dow Turner, an English professor turned linguist, realized that the Gullah language derived from 32 different African languages.

Dr Turner's work was amazing, and it was simply amazing that it took linguists that long to figure out the connection.

People come and go. Some Cultures even go through change. But language must never be lost, or else we'll lose our identity and our will to live.

Today, the Gullahs still form a strong, cohesive community in the Low Country. We hope this continues and both the language and culture is retained throughout future generations. There is more to learn, more to feature, and more to uphold.

Today, there is an enduring kinship between the Gullah people and the people of Sierra Leone. I thank them both for their contributions, hardship and commitment to maintaining their cultures through the years.

Family Reunion of a First Kind

"Sometimes life brings you pleasant surprises -- it's not scripted or orchestrated, but just right. Life can be charming, like that, if you let it."
It was a family reunion -- one that has never happened at this scale before.

True, I spent nearly 10 days with Rio at the Chiswick flat. During this time, I was also able to spend some quality time with Luke and meet his father, Derek who inspired me with his abstract paintings.

I was also able to go running with Luke a couple of times (take great satisfaction in his tremendous progress) as well as Chris (we ran down to Richmond together). In fact London has been a great running city and what I personally dub "the fittest city in Europe".

It was ideal that Luke worked at Apple, since he was able to hook me up with an appointment at the Genius Bar in Westfield Shopping Center. I had an issue with iMovie, and Apple gave me a free upgrade. (Note: It's amazing that Kim, Kae, Rio, Luke and Chris all use Macs -- I've never seen so many exclusive Mac lovers in my life)

BTW, Westfield, the largest urban shopping center in Europe, is simply amazing. It's like going to a theme park -- there is definitely something for everyone with mega stores and a large 14 screen state-of-the-art theater. You will love it, even if shopping may not be your thing.

Since Kae was in Tuscany for drama training camp, I was able to stay in her room. It was the longest I've ever spent at any place away from home in quite a while (not counting the Navy).

The Apple store where Luke works at is really nice. But I heard that the largest Apple store in the world is opening up in Covent Garden. The store has a central courtyard which will host free workshops everyday -- can't wait to see it.

My trip was day-by-day. And I extended my stay, particularly, because I found out that Kim and Kae were coming back at the end of the month. That was why, going to Northern Ireland to see friends was a great option until my sister and niece returned home.

I got more than I bargained for during that trip -- besides seeing Mark and Lee -- friends who I met in DC three years ago, I got to do a lot of quality sightseeing, got to visit Dublin and made new friends who taught me a lot about the precious value of life and understanding.

Mark and Lee took the entire day off from work to give me a grand tour of the Antrim Coast showcasing the scenic, untouched Northern Ireland coastline -- one that is one of the most beautiful in the world -- even more spectacular than Hawaii.

Arthur Magee taught me a lot about sectarian conflict and how it is important to learn and understand each other.

This whole trip was more eye-opening than going to school, and definitely a lot more fun. No encyclopedia, no ebook reader, no youtube video could teach me life's social skills better than what I learned in London, Belfast, Dublin and even Paris and Normandy.

In Paris, I fell in love with the Eifel, the Louvre, Notre Dame. In Normandy, I reflected on the greatest of sacrifices from the Greatest Generation.

I also got to make new friends: Niki Larsen from Canada and Siven Lu Ye from Australia.

We made videos together, and although the videos were mostly fun, I learned a great deal about life making them.

Even got to meet up with CAPT Phil Perdue in the most amazing coincidence ever.
Since I only had one final day in London when I returned from Belfast, our reunion was delayed for a bit as I was in Chiswick purchasing a Dahon foldable bike. But things really worked out. Thankfully, Kae, Rio and Luke saw me when they were riding by in a bus and got off to see me at the bike store. Minutes later, Lai drove by and was a life saver. Instead of having to carry the bike all the way back to my hostel in Westfield, we simply put the bike in Lai's car. Now we were ready and yearning for dinner.

In life, nothing rarely happens the way you intended it to. It's important to be flexible, fluid and understanding. Sometimes life brings you pleasant surprises -- it's not scripted or orchestrated, but just right.. Life can be charming, like that, if you let it.

In the long run, we will appreciate the fact that we were flexible and cherish the tender times that we were able to spend together.

The dinner was delicious and wholesome. I did not know it was even possible to make spaghetti so delicious. The meal, in fact, was just as good as Rio's Japanese Curry she cooked for us the night I left for Northern Ireland. This is also the very first time I've spent time with Kim, Kae, Rio and Rintaro all at the same time, under one roof. So it's a very special moment to be thankful and remember -- one that just happened when we let life's circumstances take the lead.

I had not seen Kim and Rintaro since 2008 in Paris and Kae 2008 also in London. Rio was last summer in London. Though collectively, it seemed like a lot. It had never happened with everyone together.

We had a wonderful time, talking, laughing, just enjoying a simple and pleasant meal with friends and loved ones. Nothing special, though it meant the entire world to me.

After dinner, we all went to Notting Hill to visit Rio as she was painting her clothing store. Notting Hill is a fabulous, affluent, fashionable community with beautiful Victorian homes and attractive storefronts. It is a very artsy place, which I love.

This has been an amazing year for Kim since this is the first time that she has seen Mom, Pearl and me all within the same calendar year, since she was a child. (Mom in Japan, Pearl in Hong Kong and me in London) This is no coincidence, this is meant to be, and it was a wonderful gift.

2010 is also the year, that I lost my dear Grandma in Japan. She lived a long and productive life and is greatly missed.

Again, it's amazing how life works out. The whole trip to UK was not planned. I caught a Medevac flight from Andrews at the very last minute. And during the trip, everything was almost day-by-day: where I was going next, even where I would be sleeping.

So this whole trip was no coincidence and it ended in the very best of ways.

When you leave things to the Lord, there is time for tragedy, but there is also a time to rejoice.

A Bike in a Bag

When I arrived in London and boarded its renowned Tube train, I noticed something different right away. No it wasn't the faces or the accents -- I already was expecting that.

The Difference

There were no bikes. No regular bikes at least, just foldable ones. The ones that could almost fit in a gym bag and slide underneath your seat. Come to find out only foldable bikes were allowed in the Tube, rush hour or not. I could see why the trains were compact and very crowded, even before rush hour. I finally understood the meaning of a poor, helpless sardine packed in a crushed tin box.

Interesting Features

The bike was interesting. Not only were they compact, providing for flexibility in transportation, but they were virtually thief proof. It seemed too good to be true. How come I hadn't really seen them in DC. Oh yeah, we are the land of the Big and Bountiful while London was tight and tiny. Still, I had to check one out for myself. Yeah, it folds, but how does it ride and most importantly of all, how silly do I look on it?

Dahon or Brompton

In UK, Bromptons are King. They are ubiquitous. There is even a Brompton Bike Race. They are compact and they are expensive. The Dahon, a company from Taiwan, is gaining ground in UK and market share worldwide. They are strong, light, fast and yes, more economically-conscious, if there is such a word. Also I heard that the Dahon is more reliable for longer commutes, which I was interested in. Heck, I wanted to take one on a bike ride from DC to Baltimore without acquiring any wicked bad knee or bad back pain.

So I decided to take the Dahon MU P-8 out for a spin. It was lightweight, sleek, slick and looked somewhat sporty despite its clunky wheels. I was completely enamored. In fact, I was completely sold. So sold, I bought one. On the very last day I was in London.

The Bulky Transport

Carrying the bike back to DC was not an easy task. The bike (aluminum frame) weighs about 25 pounds, and the bike bag was bulky, and navigating through London's metro system and all those stairs was not easy. I quite desperate, but very lucky to find a convenience store that was willing to give me the plastic baggies that are used to wrap juice bottles. They served as great packing material.

The Fleecing Fliers

At any rate, I got it back safe and sound (despite grief from Iberia Airlines). Make sure you check the extra bag online -- that saves you a bundle. I was fortunate to register the bike as an extra bag, not as sports equipment, which would have been 75 Euros. All in all, Iberia was very nice (unlike my experience with EasyJet earlier in the week)

The Big Surprise

As soon as I opened the bag, I was happy to see my bike had made the cross-Atlantic trip. But upon assembling the bike, my glee changed to a sullen frown as I noticed that the crankset gear was bent. I tried to fix it but the chain would continuously slip off. The chain was definitely crooked when I turned the bike upside down and back pedaled. Oh no, I exclaimed. I wasn't going to let this get me down. I didn't bring this bike all the way across the ocean to spend massive amounts of money to order a new crankset.

The Best Bike Mechanic in the World

The next day, I went to see Rob and Seth at Capitol Hill Bikes who fixed it in a jiffy with a vice grip and a mallet. As always, Rob was very reliable and I was fortunate that Seth happened to be in the shop. (Seth had sold me my very first bike 2 years ago and 4 bikes ago). He also assembled my Specialized Transition for my first Half Ironman in Cancun last September.

My Anxious Bike Legs

Then I couldn't wait any longer. My legs were dying to take it out for a spin all over the town. Didn't care what people think or whether I would get stares.

And yes indeed, I rode my Dahon 10-speeder UP and DOWN all around town, from the Mall to Chinatown, to Dupont Circle to U Street to Foggy Bottom. Even Up and down hills with the greatest of ease. The shifting was smooth and I was able to cruise up hills in tandem with other bikers with a lot bigger wheels.

In fact, I had plenty of gears, all eight of them, and the derailer shifted wonderfully and quick. After all, there really is no need to have 20-something gears (unless you're racing). All you need, IMHO, is fast, slow, one that gets you up a steep hill and a few in between.

The 20 inch Schwalbe Marathon tires provided good comfort and I heard is virtually impenetrable to thorns and hopefully glass and screws (since I get a lot of that commuting home along Suitland Parkway). I was even able to ride through a few potholes and jumped a few curbs.

So the verdict? Looks like my sleekly, sexy Specialized Transition Triathlon bike may sit in the closet for a lot longer, while I take my clunky, unattractive and a lot slower Dahon to school, to meetings, to dates and everything in between. (BTW, more ugly means less attractive to thieves)

Critical Mass for Fun, but Please Abide by the RULES

Today, I joined Critical Mass in their monthly rides through the heart of DC.

It wasn't planned. I didn't even know the group existed.

It was just a matter of being at the right place at the right time, I guess.

I had just taken my Specialized Tri bike out for a spin at Haines Point. It was exhilarating, but I wanted more.

Actually I had a deep yearning to take my new Dahon Mu P8 for a spin around the mall. It wasn't fast, it wasn't sleek. It even wasn't sexy. But it was cool, compact and precisely just me. As soon as I parked and assembled my bike, I could hear heavy and jovial screaming coming from down the street.

I turned around to see about 100 bikers of all sorts and sizes parading down the street screaming "Happy Friday." I was floored and enamored.

Needless to say, it didn't take me a lot of coaxing to join in.

We went everywhere -- up and down Independence. To Chinatown, Dupont Circle, U Street.

The most fun was speeding through tunnels hollering and singing at the top of our lungs.

Some cars honked in support. People waived. Some cars didn't appreciate us engulfing traffic and running red lights.

The group has good core values: to provide educational outreach for a more sustainable, less toxic city. The group also has great fun and promotes good morale and welfare throughout the city: greeting and waiving to passer bys and people enjoying food and drinks at local eateries.

That's fine and dandy. But the group should not be running red lights and stopping traffic without a permit.

There are over 100 cyclists and some motorists are in a hurry -- accidents can happen. Meanwhile traffic on the streets also have their own agendas and meetings to attend. There should be no reason why we can't all co-exist peacefully and respectfully, and yes, that means not running red lights.

The Landing That Changed History

"It was a travesty to see how so many young, boundless lives were forever lost on this bloody foreign beach. At the American Cemetery, I could see thousands of white crosses and Stars of David facing patriotically towards their homeland."

Today, I paid homage to the D-Day troops in Normandy. Americans, British, Canadians.

Sixty-five years later, the hilly seaside bears few scars from the dark and gray day of June 6, 1944. But on that longest day, things had turned to hell in a hurry.

I could not imagine these young soldiers jumping out of their LCAs, crossing the slippery beach and climbing the cliff face via ropes and grappling hooks in the face of nasty fire.

It was extremely unnerving. The soldiers could hear the heavy thump of shells bombarding the exterior of the coffin-like LCAs as they were approaching the shore. They knew death was knocking. But they kept approaching. They kept their mind affixed on the Star Spangled Banner and Her Majesty the Queen.

Some shells hit dead on, the LCAs exploding into tiny pieces like a box of eggs dropped from a high-rise tower. Many soldiers perished from gunshot, blast or drowning before even hitting the shore. They would never set foot on the foreign beach they aspired to reach, the sea crimson red, their faces, white with shock and trepidation.

In this picture of the approach, you could easily discern the fear in this young soldier's face.

It was a travesty to see how so many young, boundless lives were forever lost on the blood-soaked beaches. At the American Cemetery, I could see thousands of white crosses and Stars of David facing patriotically towards their homeland, saluting with only a smile. This is the final resting place for 9,400 Americans along with a monument to 1,500 more listed as missing in action. How sad that we never found their bodies -- brave Americans who never got to come home, but just washed away in the sea.

Thankfully the beaches still bear witness to the immense human sacrifice. Many of the German battery sites are maintained in excellent condition (since many of the young Germans had surrendered without putting up a fight). As a result, today we are offered a rare glimpse into a living, life-less museum that clearly depicts the power and plight of the mighty German defensive. Luckily, many of the "slave' troops from Eastern Europe and Asia would surrender at the first opportunity. Many of the troops in Normandy were comprised of an international army made up of troops from throughout the Soviet empire and even Chinese and Koreans. Can you imagine the looks in the eyes of our GIs when they first faced their enemies.

But still many Germans fought viciously and effectively. The Germans had four huge casements with a 205 mm cannon. These guns were effective in dueling with American battleships. For eight days, the German soldiers stayed inside the casements with virtually nothing to eat and drink but stale bread and bad water. They had no place to use the bathroom -- yet they stayed. Many did not surrender until they ran out of ammunition.

Pointe du Hoc

At Pointe du Hoc, the famous site where heroic Rangers assaulted the German battery site on the precipitous cliff, there are dozens of very deep craters caused by mortar from the Allied bombs and shells that had missed their targets. It was here where a navigation error caused the Rangers to miss their mark, losing valuable time and the critical element of surprise.

One cannot be but deeply moved by the sacrifices of thousands of soldiers who gave it all for the liberation of Europe. And it was not just the Americans that risked their lives. It was our beloved Allies.

And the biggest surprise when the Rangers finally arrived and climbed the cliffs of Pointe du Hoc -- there were no big guns in the encasements -- they had all been moved inland for safety.

Juno

Tomorrow, I will pay homage to Juno Beach where the Canadians had made their courageous landing. Juno happened to be the second most heavily defended of the five landing sites chose. The seawall was twice the height of Omaha and the sea was heavily mined. The next night I will make an overnight trip across the British Channel to Portsmouth where many of the soldiers sailed from.

German surprise was complete and their forces disorganized. First they were sure the Allies would attack further north on the Pas-de-Calais. Thus they had placed the bulk of the panzer forces there. These forces were not available for counter-attack on D-Day.

Counterattack

There was still an opportunity for the Germans to fight back. Rommel had the forces. But his panzer forces were not readily available. Also the Commander-in-Chief West was powerless to commit the strategic reserve with the authority of Hitler himself. And Hitler slept till noon.

My Swim and Final Reflections

As I went for a swim in the bitter cold English Channel, I had to simply ponder whether if I was a young soldier during Normandy, would I risk my life in the same way for my country. I thought long and hard.

And the simple answer was yes, but would I be brave enough to carry it out the same way these men did. That is an enduring question that bears no easy answers.

I came ashore, dried off and sadly wiped away my tears.

Tomorrow, I cross the English Channel to Portsmouth. No, I wouldn't have the guts to do the same.

Capital Crescent Trail Beckons Me

There are many bike trails in bike-friendly DC. Many of them just go around in circles, never really going any place. The Capital Crescent Trail actually goes from one signature world-class city to another.

The Capital Crescent Trail is scenic, refreshing and popular with cyclists and joggers alike.

It is paved, easy to follow and there are several stretches of serenity that causes the Georgetown and Bethesda urban setting to peacefully evaporate.

And today, the weather cooled down just enough to allow half of DC get out, to enjoy the leafy trees, the leaf-lined trail and the cool mountain breeze from the spectacular Great Falls and Potomac Gorge.

So off we went the three of us, the accidental cyclists, enjoying the view, the company, the work-out, and the occasional laughter.

And when we arrived in Bethesda, we laid back, sampled some gelato, tasted some wine and truly appreciated all that life has to offer.

And where did we go for supper -- where else but the Southwest waterfront, where we dined on delicious King Crab legs, jumbo shrimp, oysters, and an aromatic wine from Chile

It's been a while, a long while since I celebrated Mayo 12 in style.

Today, I received una bonita regalo.

The day started misty, wet, raw and capricious like the Hudson River, silent yet speechless.

We met at the Natural History Museum. I was greeted with a big hug and a beautiful smile, a smile that made me melt to the core.

I enjoyed a personal tour, a moment-by-moment narration of the fascinating and vibrant Inca culture -- a wonderful civilization that is so rich and ever relevant. I was deeply inspired and left with a insatiable yearning to hear and learn more.

Some day, I will visit the Amazon Rainforest. It is one of the Nature Seven Wonders of the World, and I am sure it will inspire me.

Because we wanted to visit the Statue of Liberty and climb up to the top of the pedestal, we decided to make that visit the next day when we had more time. (Before 9-11, I remembered climbing up to the top of the crown, all 350 steps through a cramped spiral staircase -- now this opportunity is more restricted, through the issuing of tickets).

So, the Whitney Museum was a pleasant surprise like a strawberry creme-filled truffle wrapped in an opulent hand-made box with gold and silver wire. Unlike the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Whitney focuses on living and lesser-known American artists -- artists who I consider Avante Garde --pushing the boundary more and more until experimental becomes mainstream.

My new friend, Justine, who I met on the Bolt Bus gave us a free pass. It was a nice gift -- something I couldn't resist and a testimony to being friendly to strangers, especially those who you sit next to.

Whitney was no MOMA (Metropolitan Musem of Art), but I felt the personal touch of artists showcasing their biennials. What was amazing floor by floor was that the exhibits embodied a diverse cross section of contemporary art rather than a specific theme. I left feeling like I've seen something interesting, exciting unexpected. I knew that this experience would move me again and again, for many more years.

The rest of the evening at the East End Bar (where Bday drinks were on the house) and then in the West Village (where the sound of Blues rolled from the Bayou of Nawlins) was loud, fun and evocative, and yes, oh so priceless.

Earth Day 2010: Message in a Bottle

Yesterday was the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, and my friends and I enjoyed celebrating the Day and understanding the important message at the National Mall. The highlight of the day was when Sting performed his classic "Message in a Bottle" with Roots.

Earth Day is more than just Sting and Rock music. Earth Day reminds us of our urgent and most significant responsibility towards our environment and the legacy we leave our children.

The key issue is no longer whether it's convenient, comfortable or whether we can afford it. We now need to incorporate factors such as whether or not it makes environmental sense to make that drive to New York City or to Virginia Beach and if so, should I take public transportation.

Remember it's not just the emission we're concerned about. It's also the consumption (of oil and gas) which is a precious commodity in which we need to conserve for our family.

While not as enjoyable as commuting in your own vehicle, mass transit eases congestion and reduces emissions.

Also by doing less driving and more walking, biking and catching public transportation, this reduces our dependence on oil, especially foreign oil and our need to drill off shore.

There are too many risks involved in off shore drilling and I am not convinced that this will lower the price of oil in the US. The risks gets more precarious as the water gets deeper.

Besides oil, there are many other ways we can make an impact to slow the growth of industrial farming practices -- one way is in the local grocery store -- buy voting with your wallet, and that is to buy organic. That way we can support farmers who grow their crops without pesticides and synthetic fertilizers.

And the US should take bigger, bolder steps to implement more Green options such as wind energy and solar energy, including removing the huge bureaucratic machine in the federal and local governments that are sadly killing these initiatives. In the US, unlike some countries in Europe and Asia, environmental regulations, bureaucratic inertia and heavy permitting are seriously slowing the start up of these highly critical initiatives.

I came because the wood thrush called me: They were out in mass and perhaps for another day or two. The bloom that blushes every spring and rings the Tidal Basin pink. Blindingly beautiful and then before you know, are blown away, like everything we own, not meant to last forever, not even for a lifetime or a season of change. Like the most pure virgin smile will certainly wrinkle or the undying lovethat may one day fade away, the majestic sakura as the baby blossoms fall.

So I hit the road with weary feet, still trembling from last week's 26-miler, the one that wasn't meant to be, and now I tried to wipe away. But my mind was fresh and my heart anew, hungry to steal a glimpse of those pastel petals floating loftily with every puff or sprinkle. The ground, my Nikes covered in white like the foot of snow from the errant blizzard flight, imposed on us like a long-forgotten great uncle that blanketed this city just last month, if I remember right. Other than that night, DC no longer knew pure white from the haze of snow except this fortnight, the cloud of bloom rising high and purple sepals raining nigh on the grass and foot paths something magical, idolic and ripe.

I ran with all the might I could muster but soon found myself frozen still in the light of the Pearly luster searching for the inner meaning and peace that had escaped me and hoping that this model of love and transience of life will stay indelibly etched in my enigma even if I have to chase them down before they all floated away.

Haiti: The Crisis Response Triad

1) WiFi Network (to relief workers)

2) Social Media (Facebook was the primary and most reliable means for Haitians to communicate with their loved ones overseas)

There are over 600,000 Haitians in the US and Canada.

Once again, social media shines, showing real-life value during a crisis or natural disaster.

3) Cloud Computing

Perhaps one of the most innovative facets of Cloud Computing is the incorporation of new applications that are built specifically for the immediate needs of the relief workers of Haiti.

Hundreds of web developers have created new web-based applications (such as, the We Have, We Need project that has been hailed the “Craig’s List” for the crisis in Haiti) that allow for more specific searching or execution of specific relief for Haitians.

Essentially, it’s been able to link relief workers with the Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), local Haitians, Haitians abroad, the Haitian Government and other countries to address specific needs and to get them the requisite resources quickly and efficiently.

Normally to setup critical, state-of-the-art social media websites takes enormous time, money and tremendous architecture. With cloud computing server space to host websites can be available fairly quickly.

The paradox of this situation is that the most underdeveloped nation in the Western Hemisphere is the first test bed for the implementation of cloud computing of a grand scale of international reach and premiere caliber.

This is appropriate since Haiti is one country that needs to be rebuilt from the ground up. Since the earthquake is arguably the greatest natural disaster in modern times, the silver lining is that this will be the first time in recent history that a country can be completely rebuilt with the collaboration and supervision of the world’s nations.

Reflecting

I've been to quite a few Millennium shows at the Kennedy Center. The last one I attended was this summer when Dance Asia performed.

I've always been intimately touched by the rhythmic sounds flowing gently through the concert halls like my favorite chime of sea glass clanging softly, the perfect accompaniment to a spring or summer day with a soothing sea breeze blowing, wiping away life's worries.

Understanding

It was a long, productive day of studying, trying to wrap my arms around Entrepreneurship, my mind twisted into various shapes, morphed and textured like a jagged moon terrain.

Entrepreneurship is just not about having a great technological idea. In fact, Entrepreneurship is about creating a business model that solves a critical problem.

Negotiating

Now that it has been over a week since the strongest earthquake in over 200 years struck Haiti, many are wondering why so massive and the death toll so extensive.

When responding to criticism why relief is taking so long to get to the people in need, the simple answer is because before the earthquake, Haiti was already a fragile state.

There are so many limitations to how many planes the airport can handle, the damage to the seaport, the conditions of the roads, the state of the telecommunications system, currently in shambles, etc.

Rest assured the US government and our military as well as many of those from other countries are responding proactively, comprehensively and compassionately.

Inspiring

The Haitian people are full of spirit and the their music is full of inspiration. Today, my friend Michelle and I were inspired by an evening of song, music and tribute to many of our loved ones who are suffering and who need our support.

All proceeds from the Kennedy Concert went to the Haiti Relief fund as well as ticket proceeds from the National Symphony Orchestra.

Running in Georgetown

Reflecting

Today I worshipped the gravel grounds--the routine run from the Wall to WW II to the Wash Monument -- the same rugged trails that I had hit a million times or more since I discovered running as my calling, my ancient ritual.

Understanding

For some mysterious reason, I decided to break away. Not to the ubiquitous Capitol and back today. Made my way along the Potomac, under the Memorial Bridge--Boom, Bada Bing, Bada Boom -- the rhythmic sound of traffic rolling overhead and passing JFK until DC's oldest city was within sight and reach.

Negotiating

Ran along the Georgetown waterfront, watching the locals and tourists strolling along with nothing particular in their minds that day, or enjoying a meal or sipping a margarita in the many open bars and restaurants thinking beautiful thoughts, I'm sure.

Then across the C & O Canal and up the red-brick hill, steep and sudden ushering in old Georgetown with all its high-end shops and restaurants galore. The sweet herb garden smell of something tasty emanating from a nearby Italian kitchen -- all the motivation in the world to make me stop and taste the fettucini. Thankfully I had no money, so I told myself that I had no choice but to push on.

Inspiring

The run was eloquent and eye opening. Ran past the eyes of the world, our venerable embassies: Mongolia, Venezuela; then past historic homes and mansions: Old Stone Cottage before I merged onto Pennsylvania Avenue to George Washington University and Foggy Bottom. From there, I stayed on Penn, passing the World Bank and IMF before I entered Lafayette Square next to the White House.

Navigating

Today was indeed a glorious day -- A day to profoundly wonder my mission in life and my vision for life's future. As I start preparing for the busy Holiday season, I'm glad I took time out to enjoy life's simple pleasures. I'm glad I decided to break away -- be free and roam a part of this town I rarely venture but hope to eventually get to know.

Dulles Snow Debacle

Reflecting

I remember Feb 03 distinctly -- I was of all things going house hunting and this major "President's Day" snowstorm paralyzed the Eastern Seaboard for days that no one was going anywhere. The Pentagon loved the fact that I was living in the Metropolitan apartments in Pentagon City -- and was the dude that could always come in.

We had not had any major snow storms for years since -- in 2007, we had virtually none. Most years we would have two significant snowfalls (more than 3 inches) and a couple times with just flakes that appear so soft and delicate as they fall, some stick, some just disintegrate.

That's why the Blizzard of 09 completely caught me off guard.

I had agreed over a week ago to take my friend to Dulles, so she could fly to Colombia. "Sure thing," I said. "I'd be glad to."

Little did I know that this seemingly easy trip to Dulles would turn into a 20-hour historic Christmas exodus ordeal.

Understanding

Her flight was scheduled to leave at 3:30 PM on Avianca to Bogota, Colombia. By mid-morning, I knew that this flight would not take off today.

Speaking with my friend on the phone, I told her that I would be glad to take her to the airport, however, I don't suggest going today but recommended going first thing in the morning instead.

However, Avianca instructed us that the flight was scheduled to leave on time, and if we didn't show up at the airport, my friend would miss her flight and she would not be rebooked.

We looked out the window and was shocked to see the snow coming down like golf balls in an overcrowded driving range, some being thrown as hard as a Nolan Ryan fastball.

Thankfully I had a Subaru Baja AWD, and I knew my car could handle well in the snow. It was a risk, but I felt we could handle this.

Negotiating

I asked my friend to keep on calling both Avianca and the Washington Metropolitan Airport Authority to see if we could get an update in the next few minutes. A cancellation would be good news because we would avoid having to make the dreaded 27-mile trip to Dulles until perhaps tomorrow morning.

Meanwhile, I headed outside to prep the vehicle. My Subaru was almost completely snowed in and it took me a good, intense 30 minutes just to pry myself out.

After I picked my friend up in Anacostia, we crawled down South Capitol St and entered cautiously a snow-ruined highway. We were aghast turning as white as the puffy elements that blanketed the isolated freeway -- nothing much had been cleared -- this was no man's land and the chances of us making to Dulles on time or even at all had suddenly come into serious question.

Over the 14th Street Bridge, we tried to take a shortcut via the GW Parkway. But there were too many skidding vehicles at the exit ramp -- the whole scene resembled a stock car derby at a muddy racetrack. We slowed to ask if everything was alright -- no it didn't seem so -- the people there were all in a trance. We decided to continue on 395 South instead -- the longer, but more surer route.

Despite the harsh conditions, I wasn't feeling all that stressed. Actually the constant rain of flow of tender chunks of snow felt calming, warming and in many ways, carthartic.

Within several miles, the traffic completely came to a slow, painful, dreadful crawl. Apparently a semi had gotten stuck several miles ahead and everyone behind him was paying the price of slowly chugging along, feeling the intense cold wind and keeping our eyes peeled as the visibility had plummeted -- even the car several feet ahead of us seemed like a distant blur.

I used this downtime to check my Iphone. I searched Twitter to see what people were saying about delays. "No flights are leaving Dulles," stated a post -- I appreciated the real time information from desperate travelers like us. Wouldn't it be nice if some innovative traveler on Avianca could tweet their latest info and broadcast the obvious.

Thankfully, we managed to peel ourselves from the virtual parking lot and before long, we had made it to 495 North, heading to Tyson's Corner.

That's when my friend called Avianca once more. This time, Avianca informed her that the flight had actually departed and that she would have to pay a penalty of over $1,oo0 to rebook for a flight that leaves Dulles the day after Christmas.

She was almost in tears...

I was livid. First I was feeling remorseful since it appeared that my friend would not be able to spend Christmas with her family -- the family that she had not seen in a few years.

Then I was in an utter state of shock. I glanced over to my friend who instructed me to radically alter course and set a Bee line for home. At this point, there was no point in even showing up at Dulles, despite the fact that we were only 15 minutes away.

As I continued driving north towards Bethesda, I started questioning the status and motive provided by Avianca. With the constant gush of snow and blizzard winds gusting to 40 MPH, it was physically impossible for the plane to depart.
Then I started questioning the motive once more -- perhaps Avianca knew the real status of the flight but decided to withhold it from their customers , in hopes of gouging them for more money. After all, how would their customers know whether a flight did depart on time at all.

In no time, we were approaching Exit 45 towards the airport. But my friend instructed me to head back -- for a moment she had given up hope -- all hope of seeing her family this Christmas.

The drive towards Bethesda and down Connecticut towards Adams Morgan went rather smoothly, albeit painfully. The snow continued to come down fast and furious and it was now starting to get dark, making matters a lot worse.

It was then that I decided to call the Washington Metropolitan Airport Authorities to see if they could give us an update on our flight. We were amazed and overjoyed to hear that the flight was still on the tarmac, regardless of what Avianca had said.

The flight was now delayed to 6:30 PM. We could still make it to the airport, but we would have to start from scratch since we were already back home in DC.

The second time around was rather interesting -- the storm was even more intense and there were times when we hit a patch of snow, we started to drift only to have my rear wheels gain traction and stop us from fishtailing (Thank God for AWD -- All Wheel Drive).

After making a few wrong turns and driving methodically down the Dulles Tollroad, we were finally at the airport by 7:30 PM, after navigating the roads for over five hours -- we were dead tired, our bodies as rigid as the snowed turned ice that piled up like dwift wood on both sides of the highway.

My friend tried to check in at Avianca, while I went to park at the garage. Unfortunately, the counter was closed and so were the checkpoints. Even the departure listings did not mention the Avianca Bogota flight. There was a complete dearth of information -- we felt we were lost in a foreign country with no directions or currency. Luckily my friend ran into some Colombians who happened to be on her flight. They informed her that they were told by Avianca to be at the counter by 5:00 AM the next day. We were relieved and for once, we we were set free.

With this information, we settled in at Harry's Tap Room and were fortunate to be the very last customers before they closed. All they had was chicken tenders, fries and soup -- and at this rate, it tasted like we were being rewarded with a five-course meal. Plus it was bright, loud and absolutely zero privacy. I peered inside the USO and it was crowded with Soldiers and Marines -- many heading to Afghanistan -- resembled the tight, canned berthing on an LST (Landing Ship Tank)

We were fortunate to make our way to the Subaru which was as cold as a huge block of ice in an New England fish market, but the garage offered the quietude and solitude not found anywhere inside the terminal. For a moment we were alone and images of the snow-strewn highway were now distant and slipping.

The next morning we were up at 3:30 AM. Our faces were beet red and our noses were as cold and bright as Rudolph's.

It was a special day: "Feliz Cumpleanos!," I said. She smiled at the irony of spending the first part of her Birthday in the car. "Thanks, I almost forgot," she said. It could only get better from here, she insisted -- this was her day--may her biggest wish come true.

We were the first ones at the counter. Around us, a sea of people, some sleeping, many in a daze. And after much push-back, haggling and negotiation, Avianca manifested my friend on the first flight leaving Dulles. They pushed back heavily at first, saying that the manifest was already sent to Colombia. But we didn't buy that story. We along with a few others told our compelling story and finally convinced Avianca to allow my friend to board the first flight (her original plane) rather than wait for the second one.

Inspiring

As I waited and watched my friend negotiate with the managers, I noticed someone in the corner of my eye -- someone I didnt know, but someone I recognized on the cover of a magazine. As I always do, in moments like these, I walked up and said. "Aren't you runners? Weren't you on Runners World?" Yes indeed, it was Matt and Adriana who two years ago graced the covers of Runners World.

It was great to meet them in person. I knew and remembered them, I felt that I knew them as friends. Matt told me that they were heading to Colombia to work on support a project for their High Cloud non profit organization. I thought their work had a great vision and was very inspiring -- what a great timing to see them and coincidentally on the same plane as my friend.

It was at this time that I knew that everything would be ok.
In a way, Matt and Adriana were like angels bringing good tidings in a time of distress and hopelessness.

Navigating

After we got the boarding pass, we informed the airlines that they were irresponsible in holding onto the flight despite knowing the severity of the weather and the slim chances of the snowfall clearing.

They could have made things easier and put less people at risk if they had simply canceled the flight first thing in the morning -- it was a lesson learned indeed, one starting with the patronization of Avianca (never again) and a complete reaffirmation of the RUNIN model: to Reflect, Understand, Negotiate, Innovate and Navigate -- tackling this very huge snow problem and ensuing massive delays.

The key was that we were persistent realists who complied with Avianca's erroneous call. However, we did our own research and called their bluff.

Meanwhile we know that United, Delta and all the big carriers had canceled their flights in the morning and often times automatically rebooked their passengers -- this is the right way of treating your customers, even if it affects their revenue -- safety is paramount and the right thing to do.

Later that day, when I was driving back, I stopped by the Capitol. The Snow had blanketed the Mall creating a terrain that was foreign but beautiful. I tried to dive in it, splash around in it, run in it -- but the layer was too deep, I wouldn't make any traction -- it was like ocean foam on a giant wave without the surf.

Quietly, I surrendered to the safe confines of my vehicle, glad that my friend had boarded the plane, glad that we had made it back safely and smarter knowing that the next decision would only be made with more experience, more rounded and thus more wiser.

The Dulles Snow Fall Debacle

That's why the Blizzard of 09 completely caught me off guard.

I had agreed over a week ago to take my friend to Dulles, so she could fly to Colombia. "Sure thing," I said. "I'd be glad to."

Little did I know that this seemingly easy trip to Dulles would turn into a 20-hour historic Christmas exodus ordeal.

Understanding

Thankfully I had a Subaru Baja AWD Turbo, and I knew my car could handle well in the snow. It was a risk, but I felt we could handle this (AWD means all four tires will turn with an equal amount of power and traction)

Negotiating

I asked my friend to keep on calling both Avianca and the Washington Metropolitan Airport Authority to see if we could get an update in the next few minutes. A cancellation would be good news because we would avoid having to make the dreaded 27-mile trip to Dulles until perhaps tomorrow morning.

Meanwhile, I headed outside to prep the vehicle. My Subaru was almost completely snowed in and it took me a good, intense 30 minutes just to pry myself out.

After I picked my friend up in Anacostia, we crawled down South Capitol St and entered cautiously a snow-ruined highway. We were aghast turning as white as the puffy elements that blanketed the isolated freeway -- nothing much had been cleared -- this was no man's land and the chances of us making to Dulles on time or even at all had suddenly come into serious question.

Over the 14th Street Bridge, we tried to take a shortcut via the GW Parkway. But there were too many skidding vehicles at the exit ramp -- the whole scene resembled a stock car derby at a muddy racetrack. We slowed to ask if everything was alright -- no it didn't seem so -- the people there were all in a trance. We decided to continue on 395 South instead -- the longer, but more surer route.

Within several miles, the traffic completely came to a slow, painful, dreadful crawl. Apparently a semi had gotten stuck several miles ahead and everyone behind him was paying the price of slowly chugging along, feeling the intense cold wind and keeping our eyes peeled as the visibility had plummeted -- even the car several feet ahead of us seemed like a distant blur.

I used this downtime to check my Iphone. I searched Twitter to see what people were saying about delays. "No flights are leaving Dulles," stated a post -- I appreciated the real time information from desperate travelers like us. Wouldn't it be nice if some innovative traveler on Avianca could tweet their latest info and broadcast the obvious.

Thankfully, we managed to peel ourselves from the virtual parking lot and before long, we had made it to 495 North, heading to Tyson's Corner.

That's when my friend called Avianca once more. This time, Avianca informed her that the flight had actually departed and that she would have to pay a penalty of over $1,000 to rebook for a flight that leaves Dulles the day after Christmas.

She was almost in tears...

I was livid. First I was feeling remorseful since it appeared that my friend would not be able to spend Christmas with her family -- the family that she had not seen in a few years.

Then I was in an utter state of shock. I glanced over to my friend who instructed me to radically alter course and set a Bee line for home. At this point, there was no point in even showing up at Dulles, despite the fact that we were only 15 minutes away.

As I continued driving north towards Bethesda, I started questioning the status and motive provided by Avianca. With the constant gush of snow and blizzard winds gusting to 40 MPH, it was physically impossible for the plane to depart.
Then I started questioning the motive once more -- perhaps Avianca knew the real status of the flight but decided to withhold it from their customers , in hopes of gouging them for more money. After all, how would their customers know whether a flight did depart on time at all.

In no time, we were approaching Exit 45 towards the airport. But my friend instructed me to head back -- for a moment she had given up hope -- all hope of seeing her family this Christmas.

The drive towards Bethesda and down Connecticut towards Adams Morgan went rather smoothly, albeit painfully. The snow continued to come down fast and furious and it was now starting to get dark, making matters a lot worse.

It was then that I decided to call the Washington Metropolitan Airport Authorities to see if they could give us an update on our flight. We were amazed and overjoyed to hear that the flight was still on the tarmac, regardless of what Avianca had said.

The flight was now delayed to 6:30 PM. We could still make it to the airport, but we would have to start from scratch since we were already back home in DC.

The second time around was rather interesting -- the storm was even more intense and there were times when we hit a patch of snow, we started to drift only to have my rear wheels gain traction and stop us from fishtailing (Thank God for AWD).

After making a few wrong turns and driving methodically down the Dulles Tollway, we were finally at the airport by 7:30 PM, after navigating the roads for over five hours -- we were dead tired, our bodies as rigid as the eyes that lined up both sides of the street.

My friend tried to check in at Avianca, while I went to park at the garage. Unfortunately, the counter was closed and so were the checkpoints. Even the departure listings did not mention the Avianca Bogota flight. There was a complete dearth of information -- we felt we were lost in a foreign country with no directions or currency. Luckily my friend ran into some Colombians who happened to be on her flight. They informed her that they were told by Avianca to be at the counter by 5:00 AM the next day. We were relieved and for once, we we were set free.

With this information, we settled in at Harry's Tap Room and were fortunate to be the very last customers before they closed. All they had was chicken tenders, fries and soup -- and at this rate, it tasted like we were being rewarded with a five-course meal. Plus the Harry's ale was nice and was exactly what the Doctor ordered on this long, cold night.

Today is my anniversary on a new lease on life. This is not a lease that you just sign arbitrarily with some random landlord so that you can have a place to rest. This is a lease that allows you to breathe, embrace and live another day so that we can make a valuable impact to those who are around us.

Three years ago today, I was involved in a shocking and traumatic head-on collision in the middle of the highly-travelled Rock Creek Parkway.

It was a bizarre accident, something that just didn't seem right -- something I can never explain, something I would never want to relive again, but glad anyhow to live another day.

Understanding

Where did I go?

I was just leaving Cilantro in Georgetown -- one of my friends from the Pentagon had turned 30 and was throwing a big bash. I was happy for her -- she had leased the entire top floor of the boutique restaurant, and there would be well over 200 guests, nearly 50 of them I already knew.

Could have been Avoided

The uncanny part of this whole ordeal was that I was not even supposed to be there that evening. No, I didn't have anything else planned. The truth is, I was not even invited to my friend's party at all. But after word got out from my friends and co-workers that she was throwing a party, I gave my birthday friend a polite call and asked her why I wasn't on her list.

She quickly replied that it was an oversight, apologized dearly and immediately shot out an evite.

Why I had the audacity to mention this to her, I'll never find out. But I am deeply glad to be able to live another day with the realization that perhaps some things are better left unsaid, some things are better left alone.

Good Decision; My Lucky Night

So with so many friends, acquaintances and friends of friends socializing and of course, networking, I was truly in my elements. And the thought crossed my mind many times -- I thought about grabbing a beer or a cocktail. The moment was festive, and I was definitely in the mood. But for some unexplained reason, my inner instincts got the best of me, and I decided strongly against it.

Before long, I started getting tired and felt the urge to go home-- another mystery, since it was only 10:00 PM.

So, after bidding adieu, I set off on my trusty Ford Ranger pickup truck towards the heart of the city.

Wrong Way Short Cut

Instead of driving towards Washington Circle and towards Foggy Bottom, I had decided to take a shortcut towards the Mall and Independence Avenue.

Instinctively, I had turned down the ramp towards the Parkway, oblivious to the fact that as soon as I entered the Parkway, I would come face to face with a massive wave of oncoming traffic.

These drivers had just come over the bridge from Virginia, and they had not yet slowed down for the more modest DC speed limits. For them it was the Rock Creek 500.

My Brush with Death

It was too late -- my life flashed in front of me. The oncoming traffic slowed to a ghastly crawl, it seemed, but it was truly just my imagination because like charging Roman gladiators they were flank to flank and heading flank speed towards me.

There was nothing I could do, except slow down and prayed that the traffic would completely miss me.

The car that hit me was an SUV. I remember seeing their tense faces, their strange look in their eyes inquiring why I was going the wrong way.

It appeared to be two stocky men -- who immediately egressed. Whew -- a good sign that they seemed physically unhurt.

Surprisingly, one of the men, I believe the passenger, immediately came over to ask for a light. I was still shaken and sort of in a daze, but without hesitation, I turned around to search the back seat for a flashlight, trying to make sense of things that had just been twisted and turned around.

"No, a cigarette light," he snapped.

I was disappointed that I didn't have a light to give him, but found it amazing that his mind was not in a state of shock like mine. A cigarette seconds after a violent head-on collision would not normally be something I would have in mind, but in this minute of confusion and turmoil, it only seemed logical to want a smoke.

His nerves was probably wrecked, the car body was totaled, but his body it appeared, would be just fine.

Inspiring

The blunt, beat-up image and optics of the two vehicles with the hood and grill smashed mercilessly was ghastly terrifying especially for the oncoming traffic that came to an abrupt standstill that winter night.

It was a miracle that everyone survived -- it's a miracle that no one was hurt.

The cops were the first ones on the scene. As expected, they were hot on my case, interrogating me over and over again whether I had anything to drink. Of course, they would not take my word and put me through a rather intense series of tests to check my sobriety and mental capacity.

After I was given a strong thumbs up and had finished giving the police report, we simply had to just sit painfully and wait patiently. I said a quick prayer of thanks and whispered a meaningful prayer for the other two men -- total strangers, but strangers whom I came too close to know. That's when I reached over and noticed my blackberry holstered to my belt.

I knew I had to notify friends and colleagues, so I fired off a quick email to my friend at work who was also at the birthday party...

It took over an hour for the police and paramedics to clear us. The only injury I sustained was a rib injury from the inertia I experienced that threw me against the steering wheel. Luckily, the seat belt kept me from going through the windshield.

All Alone

I wanted to just go home, but nobody was around to pick me up.

The other vehicle had their girlfriends come to check on them. I was happy for them that they had company, and I felt sad that I was all alone. During this trying moment, I wanted nothing more than comfort and a hug from a loved one to tell me that it's going to be ok. So I sat there just watching -- their friends terrified at first, but now ecstatic to see that they were not hurt.

Then the cathartic moment came when all of a sudden the driver left his party and approached me.

"You're going to be ok?"

"I'm just fine. How 'bout you."

"We're going to make it; I wish you the best of luck."

Then with these parting words, we stood up to say goodbye and to give each other a big hug to reassure one another that accidents do happen and that life is the most precious gift of all.

The Long, Painful Ride Home

Once everyone had embraced each other and started heading home, I hopped a ride to the metro with the tow truck, caught a train to the nearest metro station to my home, then a bus which took me minutes to my doorstep.

It was a long ride for a long night, and by the time I entered my doorway, my body felt so beat up that I just wanted to lay on my bed and cry.

I would not get much sleep that night. I kept on tossing and thinking how it could have ended up -- either me in the morgue, in the hospital, or in the slammer.

Sometime that night I finally dozed off and slipped into a silent soliloquy that took me to another world away.

The next morning I awoke feeling more rested, but still groggy and with a thumping head ache that wouldn't go away. I was still in disbelief about what happened -- many times I looked out my window hoping to see my truck parked neatly in the driveway.

After a hot shower and a warm breakfast, I felt dramatically better. Still my ribs were tender and in nagging pain, but I wanted to head out and get some fresh air.

The Celebration

Earlier in the week, Rajika had invited me to celebrate the 5th birthday of the Asian elephant calf, Kandula at the Smithsonian National Zoo. There's no reason why I couldn't celebrate Kandula's birthday. I was glad to be alive and I could celebrate another day of life in the Zoo.

So I caught a bus to see Rajika-- it seemed today was just any ordinary day, being thankful to be alive, and thankful that I could live to tell my story.

Moral of the story:

1) Some things are better left unsaid -- I shouldn't have called my friend who forgot to invite me. Perhaps there was a reason why she forgot. God had a reason for me not to be there. And when I foolishly intervened, he was gracious enough to save my life.

2) There was also another reason not to drink anything that night -- seemed counterintuitive -- but not everything in life has to make sense or has to be done a certain way, just because it's expected or everyone else is doing it. You are you and only you can do what's best for you.

This time I sensed the specifics and wisely listened to my inner voice -- Immaculate and Almighty, God was talking to me, and because I stubbornly but unconditionally listened, I'm able to share these life-changing lessons today.

Back on My Feet Inaugural Reception

I had the pleasure to meet Anne Mahlum, Lauren Williams, Autumn Campbell and the wonderful staff during the Back on My Feet inaugural social at the Union Pub.

I am impressed with the wonderful features of this inspirational and purposeful program that encourages everyone to run together and bond together, regardless of race, education or socioeconomic status.

Friends Forever Coz the Welcome Never Ends

Today, my friend from work, Rhett, drove me to Dewitt Army Hospital located in beautiful and scenic, Ft Belvoir. I've never been to Dewitt, and I've never had a colonoscopy.

That's right a colonoscopy at 42. But why at this age when the American Cancer Society does not recommend getting screened until you're 50 -- because my GI physician recommended I get one and I listen to doctor's advice.

COL B was energetic and in a great mood -- which was exactly the right medicine I needed from my surgeon. About this time, I was missing my coffee and even going under the camera did not rattle my nerves. I remember talking with him about the procedure or was it about pro sports . The next moment, I was injected with two tubes of med, and then without a shudder, I was sound asleep.

The procedure went well, virtually no pain, just discomfort and a lot of prodding around my belly. But I was completely knocked out on general anesthesia, and I didn't feel any pain.

The next thing I know, I wake up in the waiting room. It was over, and within minutes, Rhett came back to said 'Hi." What a great friend who waited patiently all morning -- an officer, a gentleman and a true humanitarian.

And so now I was heading home. The worst part was the prep -- submitting myself to a 24 hour fast and drinking all the colyte I could possibly ingest at 10 minute intervals to clean out my system and to remember to stay very close to the bathroom all night long.

The effects of colyte is explosive and immediate. However, I had to attend a meeting that evening, and I'm sure my friends did not appreciate my frequent trips to the restroom.

Colyte is disgusting and dreadful, but it could save lives, and it was worth every single drop.

Today, I also heard from a dear friend via Facebook (FB has a unique way to bring back old friends -- when everyone old suddenly becomes new again ). I have not seen or spoken to her for almost 25 years. Didn't know if it would be another 25 more years.

I was thrilled, until she told me that she was battling cancer -- that's when my jaw dropped, my heart sank. I thought about the colonoscopy I had earlier and how much medicine had advanced and why I'm holding up hope.

I remember the laughs the hugs the teasing the chats. I remember how she had embraced me and how she had become my family's first friends when we came over from afar.

Today is Kanita's 27th birthday. Check out the gourmet meal (Surf and Turf) that Wendy prepared for her. The sirloin steak with gravy, shrimp and asparagus was out of this world. This was by far the best meal I've ever eaten at home.

Food Poisoning at Fiesta DC

Reflection:

I have never been to Fiesta DC. Never had a chance to personally enjoy the family-focused festivities of this homegrown Latino festival in the charming and historic neighborhood where Columbia Heights and Mount Pleasant merge.

Columbia Heights, used to be the place to live. It was in the early part of the 20th century, when this area was one of the most fashionable and desirable places to live in the city. The opulent and world-renowned Tivoli Theater was built in 1924 there and this vibrant community was adjacent to the thriving black communities of Shaw and U Street. But as fate would have it, like the majority of the city along 14th Street and U, the neighborhood and storefronts were ravaged during the 1968 riots after the assassination of Martin Luther King. Many of the stores stayed vacant for decades and Columbia Heights lost its twinkle and luster. Now we fast forward to today..

Mount Pleasant is an idyllic cultural center located in the heart of the Adams Morgan, Columbia Heights historic triangle. It has quaint residential streets filled mostly with the middle class and many immigrant families from El Salvador.

In 1991, this Hispanic community experienced the worst riot since 1968 when a Salvadorean man was shot and killed by a police officer who allegedly came at her with a knife.

The aftermath of this event was massive rioting for three nights leading to hundreds of injuries and arrests.

Understanding:

Every time I walk by the historic sign at Mount Pleasant that locates the center of the riot, I think about how the massive violence had erupted due mostly to misunderstanding, miscommunication and mistakes. In life, it is critical that we try to understand other people, realize the cause of their anger and the need to vent that anger, someway, somehow -- hopefully without causing too much harm and damage.

Negotiating:

Well I had a great time watching the Flamenco dancing and feeling the hot rhythm of salsa roll right through me. People seemed to be enjoying themselves and enjoying the great vibe and festive atmosphere that has become the trademark of this popular Latino community.

I was feeling great, too until I got something to eat...

It was around 4:30 PM, when the vendors were starting to wrap things up. I saw a sign for chicken sandwich, chips and a drink for $4.00 -- this particular vendor was motivated to sell out and close shop for the day.

Normally, I am more selective and usually go for something that I can see cooked in front of me. But filming and interviewing, I was in a bit of rush. I would grab something and go.

I agreed to buy the sandwich and was surprised when they handed me a chicken salad sandwich instead of a chicken breast patty sandwich.

Still, I was busy taking pictures and enjoying the festival, so I scoffed down the sandwich, not even thinking twice -- the grim truth is that I wished I had thought long and hard about it and the risk of eating anything made with mayonnaise sold by a vendor that was not a licensed restaurant, perhaps not even a licensed vendor.

It hit me almost right away -- feeling queasy from the chicken and mayo. A headache ensued..something just wasn't right. Still I pushed on and enjoyed the rest of the afternoon.

But by 7:00 PM, I was home and downtrodden. The discomfort, the pain exacerbated.

It started with stomach cramps, then nausea, then vomiting and it continued through the night until the cramps picked up a notch and I started feeling cold spells.

I've had food poisoning before -- the last time earlier this summer when I ate undercooked salmon.

But never in my life had I suffered from food poisoning this severe with symptoms so painful and unbearable, I felt like I had been run over by a truck. This was the worst abdominal pain I've received since my appendicitis ruptured in 1994. This happened when I was home, alone, asleep, dangerously close to dying. Because the appendix had perforated, open surgery had to be performed -- the Lord wanted me to live.

Innovation:

Not knowing what to do and not able to sleep through the pain, I immediately googled my symptoms and also searched some of the treatment on Web MD.

Initial search concluded that I needed to contact the nearest hospital. So I called the VA Medical Center who told me to come in immediately.

So unbearable that at 2:30 AM, I had enough and drove myself slowly and methodically to the Washington Hospital Center.

On the way there, I threw up again -- my 10th time since getting sick. I had become dangerously dehydrated, not keeping anything in, not even plain water.

I parked at the garage just minutes away, but the walk to the ER seemed long and excruciating. This was more painful than running my half Ironman.

After waiting for nearly two painful hours in the lobby, I was admitted into a room with a voiceforus patient who was rude and obnoxious.

I never got to see his face -- he was behind a green curtain, and he was yelling and screaming about his body parts almost the entire time we shared a room together.

When I met the doctor, she ordered a small morphine drip which along with my IV took away the pain and I started feeling dramatically better almost immediately.

Within two hours by 0700, they discharged me. I wanted to stay away a bit longer and get some rest, but they clearly wanted me to go before the next shift.

So tonight was interesting -- Glad it's behind me and glad I learned a good lesson that I swear to make the same mistake again -- just the pain alone is motivation enough.

Be careful about what you eat at festivals especially anything prepared with mayonnaise.
Be careful if the vendor is trying desperately to get rid of their goods.
Be careful if the vendor is not a licensed restaurant or from some trusted organization you are familiar with.
Make sure the food has been refrigerated and your chances of getting food poison may be greater later during the day.

Triathlons are full of inspiring stories.

Wendy and Steve Spohn's story is a perfect example of one.

Steve and Wendy’s daughter, Julia, was born on June 9, 2006 in a small hospital in Bamberg, Germany.

One day after Julia was born, Wendy and Steve discovered that Julia had a severe birth defect--she had been born with three heart chambers instead of four.

Both Wendy and Steve were Soldiers in the Army and the entire family was relocated to Washington DC. There, Julia was treated at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center where doctors diagnosed her with Heterotaxy Syndrome.

Since the Spohn's and their one-year-old son, Lukas, had left all their belongings in Germany and had no duty station to call home, they were homeless, until the Ronald McDonald House of Washington DC provided them shelter and food.

“It was a blessing to have a place for our son to take a break from the hospital and just enjoy being a toddler,” Wendy said.

Julia had undergone two major surgeries and was waiting for a liver transplant when sadly, she acquired a hospital-borne infection and passed away at 4 months old.

After Julia’s tragic passing, Wendy and Steve tried several times to have another baby, but each time they miscarried, four times in two years.

During this time of grief and suffering, Wendy was determined to do something challenging and different to pay tribute to the pain her own daughter Julia had endured in her short life.

Wendy decided to embark on an intense physical training program to bring her body fat back under the Army’s requirements and finish a triathlon in honor of her daughter Julia.

Wendy did some research online and discovered that the Nation's Triathlon would be held in DC, on her birthday.

So with only three months till the triathlon, Wendy and her husband Steve embarked in an intensive training program that culminated with their first sprint triathlon last month.

"All the pain that we went through was in honor of her," Wendy declared. “I can gain closure from this experience and be able to move on as we move on to our next duty station."

"We completed this journey together as a family; it means a lot to both of us," Steve Spohn stated with pride.

Reflecting

The history of China, like it's people, is vast and colorful. So many Dynasties and Emperors were born into this eclectic world. It is no wonder a production such as Shen Yun has come into out lives. It is amazing how no matter what country you go to, religion will always play a major role in its' current affairs.

In 1992 Li Hongzhi founded the Falun Gong system of beliefs. The practice emerged at the end of China's "qigong boom" in the early 1990s as a form of qigong. Falun Gong differs from competing qigong schools through its absence of daily rituals of worship, its greater emphasis on morality, and the purported theological nature of its teachings.

Understanding

This evening I had the tremendous pleasure to watch one of the greatest shows of this century. Yes, indeed the brilliant and inspiring Shen Yun with the silky, flowing costumes and the incredible classical music -- the amazing tunes and tones coming from the xylophone, the trumpet, the tympanis, the pianist -- all blending together like one smooth piece of cloth, held tightly together by an amazing conductor.

Negotiating

Shen Yun is a magnificent and majestic experience, something that can be shared with one and all. The performance explains the principles of truth, compassion and forebearance. I truly believe that when people are in the midst of such a melodic masterpiece, coupled with a meaningful message, the human body body can become healed, in some cases, from our inflictions and diseases. This is what I'm suggesting. This is an option in attaining not only a peace of mind but a healthy state of life.

Inspiring

It was not the music or the costumes that I came to see. I came to hear the message and to learn the themes that so struck me and left a deep impression on my mind and soul that it took my breath away.

I was deeply moved and inspired by the life story of an innocent family that suffers from persecution, but eventually finds peace in heaven.

Each scene had a different message with a broader implications.

Negotiating

Scenes like this was so emotional, touching and uplifting. I left with a better understanding that life is indeed special and that good is definitely rewarded and evil is punished. One day, I hope Shun Yun performs in mainland China -- the people in this great country need to see this -- their lives will be forever changed.

You will be at peace feeling very spirited watching this, trust me.

A Hometown Store that Dolls up Love

As I was driving home from my incredible tour of the Luray Caverns, the rain started pouring incessantly and my hunger was chiding me each mile I drove without a rest stop.

Call it good fortune, as I was passing through remote Amissville, a small town about 60 miles from DC, my hunger finally got the best of me and coaxed me to turn my wheel towards a country store that appeared to serve up a good BBQ pulled pork sandwich.

I was struck by the hometown, casual, family-oriented atmosphere of this restaurant that also serves as a nice community-oriented consignment store.

The store was named Dolly's. Their specialty was pizza, wings and homemade sandwiches. Come to find out it was named after two people: Grandma Dolly and Dolly's sister-in-law who was also nicknamed Dolly.

I treated myself to a delicious egg sandwich as well as a roasted turkey sandwich on wheat bread. I stuffed it down to satiate my growling hunger. But my taste buds were calling me to slow down and enjoy the experience.

I was impressed to see Grandma, Mom, daughter, nieces, nephews and in-laws all working together in unison.

They were all calling each other names like "Ma", "Love", "Sweetie" -- I enjoyed watching them all work together, just a family should, but rarely do now a days.

I came at the perfect time. Not only to get out of the rain, but Angelina, Jesse and several others were heading to FEDEX field to watch the Steelers play the Redskins. That's why, I'm sure, they were cooking up a batch of pizza and wings.

Family hard at work, but working closely together as if the family depended on it.

The family seemed so happy and in unison. My hunger was satiated, but my spirits were lifted.

In this day and age -- seeing families work together, spend time together and stay together is rather unique and a precious virtue that transcends what we perceive as right and normal.

Needless to say, I had a very pleasant ride home. First seeing the beauty of Luray, then watching the beauty of a loving family.

A cold front had shoved its way through from the capes of the Shenandoah and the heavens was dumping up a storm enough to fill Lake Moomaw in the winter, but the peaceful, loving touch of this nice loving family carried me home. Yes, all the way home.

Homecoming

I flew in with approximately 200 Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Airmen who deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan for up to one year.

A flight that I barely made (Space-A), and one that I didn't expect to make turned out to be the highlight of my trip.

It was an honor flying with my brothers and sisters back home. And it was a great honor being in the receiving line of the best, most heart-felt welcoming I've ever witnessed in my 20 years of service.

What a wonderful way to come home after the whirlwind tour of Europe and a fantastic way to end my Navy career.

I start school on Sunday and go on terminal leave until the end of October.

Thank you sincerely to everyone especially Operation Welcome Home for giving our Heroes the welcome that they truly deserve.

Got Bumped, Deja Vu

I didn't make it on the flight to Istanbul. Bummer... My Airlines overbooked and I, along with a couple dozen desperate patients, were left stuck, once again in DC.

My Airlines issued me a ticket on the next flight out of Dulles -- first thing in the morning to Heathrow.

I am now heading to London and will get an opportunity to witness and participate in the London Triathlon on Sun, 2 Aug. Can't wait..

Let's see where this adventure leads. Gotta rush, gotta plane to catch

Prague is the capital and largest city of the Czech Republic. Prague has been the political, cultural, and economic center of the Czech state for more than 1100 years.

The extensive historic center of Prague has been included in the UNESCO list of world heritage sites. The Prague castle is the largest medieval castle in the world. Prague is also known as the "mother of cities', "city of a hundred spires" and the "golden city".

I guess I will find out why.

I got accepted to GW! After a nearly eight years hiatus from any type of classroom training, I am thrilled to be attending such a prestigious institution of higher learning.

Yes, it's been a while but I'm sure I'll fit in since each student is required to have at least 10 years of work experience. Wonder if my 20 years in the Navy fits the bill?

Centrally located at the heart of DC, near the State Department, the White House, Dupont Circle, and the Pentagon, George Washington is one prime spot for learning, networking and of course running.

I'm stoked -- Intensive training starts Aug 16th.

The schooling starts and the running never ends..

Ironman 70.3 Cancun

I'll be flying to Cancun to participate in a half Ironman (70.3) on Sept 20. Will be flying from DCA on Sept 18 and arrive in Cancun by 10:30 on Friday. The race is on Sunday and will include a 1.2 miles swim, 56 mile bike and a 13.1 mile run.

The race is limited to 1,200 triathletes.

On the Steps of the Capitol to Pay Tribute to America's Best

Not since Inauguration Day, have I been so inspired -- this special music-fest in the steps of the US Capitol merged music, War Heroes, Flag waving and dramatic readings from Hollywood stars. Particularly inspiring was the story of SGT José Pequeño who was ambushed in Iraq and severely wounded when an insurgent had tossed a grenade into his Humvee.

José lost the bottom two lobes of the left side of his brain, and the doctors from Iraq to Landstuhl to Bethesda issued the grim outlook that it would take a miracle for Jose to recover. His mother, Nellie, and sister, Elizabeth, went immediately to his side and remained there for over three years. They kept the Faith and stayed with Jose through 17 surgeries and many different hospitals.

This year's concert celebrated the 200th birthday of the Abraham Lincoln. And GEN Colin Powell called on all Americans to support the wounded and their families who need and deserve our support.

After standing proudly when the orchestra played Anchors Aweigh and clapping fervently as they played the other service tunes, I was motivated to head out on my 5 mile run around the National loop. This time, I stopped at the Vietnam Memorial to honor the fallen and to read and cherish some of the momentos that families, friends and even perfect strangers -- but all Patriots had left behind to thank and remember.

Run to Remember our Heroe

I love the Memorial Day Concert -- it has all the fixings of a small town charm in a big, American city. Yes, there are other bigger and more signficant parades -- National Independence Day Parade, Cherry Blossom to name a few. But this parade (that started merely five years ago) was created to pay tribute to Heroes like Jose Pequeno, and I am so grateful to witness this appreciation by so many and to also have the opportunity to serve my Country for which I owe my life and freedom to. So let's march on....

As I ran along the Constitution, I was so motivated and inspired. Fans waving flags, people from all over America applauding, dancing like the renowned Ballou High School Knights Marching Band looking crisp and sounding sharp as they usually do (when I drive by their school during practice). Trumpets blaring the service theme songs making my head spin round and round. I felt like a Million Dollars as I ran along with them, clapping and jogging in sync. My run led me to the venerable Vietnam War Memorial.

At the Wall, I could see veterans reflecting, embracing, holding back tears. These images resonated so deeply and stirringly with me. Thank you Vietnam veterans for your service to our Country during this very important time, and I am sorry that it took a long time for America to say "Thanks."

Jose Pequeno -- My American Hero

Running allows me to meet people I would never have a chance to see if only walking. And today, running presented me a rich blessing in the form of a true Miracle.

It is such a honor and privilege to personally meet my American Hero, Jose Pequeno, his mother, Nellie and his sister, Elizabeth, just a day after they were all honored at the patriotic Memorial Day concert yesterday.

After the concert and being truly touched by their inspirational story, the first thing I did when I went home was read more online. When I informed Nellie this, she pointed me to the website: www.caringbridge.org -- Elizabeth has journaled their remarkable story of recovery on Caring Bridge regularly and it was a wonderful and inspirational way to learn more about their incredible gift of love.

What was wonderful was that Jose looked great and was so strong. I knew that he could hear me and understand my true words of thanks -- I was deeply touched by their love, spirit and immense faith -- my prayers are with Jose, Nellie, Elizabeth and the rest of their loving family.

Running has changed my life -- and today, running has led me to a true American Hero -- someone who I'll never forget. Jose, I salute you! Thank you Jose, Nellie and Elizabeth!
